THE ROLE OF ACADEMICS The main function of the education system in the United States has always been to educate students so that they can become productive citizens. But the school system has become much more than that over the years. Schools have become places where people develop their talents in sports and other activities, safe havens for those who come from broken homes, and also a place to learn about the cruelties of life. Where does academics fit into this picture? It still exists, but sometimes it is pushed to the side, especially once a student reaches high school. Students will have to deal with peer pressure, stress at home, and many other problems on a daily basis. There is barely enough time to concentrate on academics. Some students will succeed in school, while others will not. This is a problem that continues to plague the education system to this day. Motivating students becomes more difficult once they enter high school. Incentives such as scholarships to college, awards, and recognition are given to those who show initiative, but for some, it is not enough. When college admissions boards are looking for prospective students, they will look at many applications before making any decisions. The students who have good grades, are active in a few activities, and help out in their communities have the best chances of getting into college. Students who do not demonstrate these qualities might not get to go to the college they have chosen. The role of academics is still very important to a student’s academic future. Being able to provide an environment that can teach effectively and help students understand that academics are important is the biggest task the education system has to face each year.
